As of now, it has been
declared by Blizzard that players’ stockpiled gold from World of Warcraft to pick up items and
characters can be used in other Battle.net games, which including Overwatch, Hearthstone, or Heroes of
the Storm.
The new system is an expansion of the existing WoW Token, which allows WoW
players to use gold to buy tokens to redeem for game time, or buy tokens with
real money to convert into in-game gold. This system is similar to
Blizzard’s WoW Tokens
initiative, which allows players to convert their gold or even unused items
into free play time.
Blizzard
is expanding that effort by letting players indirectly trade WoW gold for in-game items. On Battle.net
the gold that they’ve earned in World of Warcraft into credit can be
converted by players. The move allows players to convert their in-game currency
into virtual goods for other Blizzard products,
like Overwatch and Hearthstone. Thanks to the change in the way
Blizzard’s WoW tokens work, players can now farm World
of Warcraft gold and apply it towards credit
for Overwatch loot boxes, Heroes of the Storm character unlocks
and Hearthstone cards.
You'd
better prepare to farm a lot of gold, though. The purchase price for
a WoW Token at the auction house can fluctuate wildly. That gives each
in-game gold piece a rough value between 1/100th and 2/100th of a cent, when
converted to Blizzard.net balance. Even for min-maxing players who manage
to net hundreds of thousands of gold in a month, which translates to just a few
hundred dollars in spending money across the Blizzard ecosystem.
