About 50 million
characters were created since Path of
Exile was launched in 2011. There are lots of character unique names that
have to be thought up. Certainly, many of these characters should be abandoned,
as is same as an online role-playing game. These inactive
characters occupy space on the
server, other players may want to claim but can't along with their names.
Since
you never know whether the owner of the account would log in again and play for
a while, the thing is that Grinding Gear
Games can't delete these characters after a long period of inactivity. It
would be unhappy for the person who decides to log into the game again for
whatever reason and find out that his account has been wiped. It is valuable to
the account and the characters, and they're gone when players have invested
time on playing those characters, acquiring Path of Exile Items, honing those skills
and exerting effort to avail of PoE Currency.
Why they can't be deleted, and their names can't be
changed either. There's too much value in that character, as inactive as they
may. Also, an online role-playing game is a big turn-off for gamers deleting
characters, no matter how good the game is. It is a downer for the players who
have to work their way back to their previous standing whenever an MMO wipe
accounts for any reason. Players can acquire more opportunity to get the exalted
orb.
Eventually, due to not being able
to get the name they want, this problem makes an online role-playing game less
hospitable from the get-go for new and returning players. They can put some
numbers at the end of the name, but it's not the same as the feeling of making
something original that reflects your personality, and it is a big part of the appeal
for role-playing games at first. Therefore, something must be done to alleviate
this minor but major problem in Path of Exile actually.
Grinding Gear Games comes up the solution
to this character name problem with a pretty ingenious. Instead of wiping old
accounts or ignoring the problem, they implement a system for freeing up old
character names. If someone makes a new character and takes a name of an old
character that hasn't been logged in for more than one year, then the owner of the
old character will be prompted to rename it in the next login. If the name is
taken by a character which has been logged in within one year, then that name
cannot be taken.
In this way, Grinding Gear Games has much solved
problem without having to delete characters together or sitting on their hands
to the most developers and publishers which seem like a minor cosmetic problem.
But anyway, we're talking about a game that has microtransactions of cosmetic
enhancements, so they care about the look and feel of characters certainly.
This new feature will be implemented when the new expansion goes live. For more
